The Pillars. Lost and forgotten, the legendary hangout is little more than a myth to the students of Sommerton High. So when Aaron Decker and his friends uncover the fabled spot deep in the Florida woods, a typical Friday night turns into a cause for celebration. That is, until a second, more menacing group of seniors shows up uninvited.

Things soon take a turn for the bizarre. An unnatural mist blankets the forest. Strange visitors step from the fog, violating their circle of firelight. Forced into the brume, a massive house looms before them, its ancient doors knocked from twisted hinges.

Specters of a bygone era. A sinister house in the woods, screaming to tell its secret. Differences must be ignored, rivalries set aside as nine students stumble through a series of inexplicable encounters in their desperate quest to survive the night.

It was a smooth and easy read that I really enjoyed. The characters and back stories develop quickly and are intriguing. The chapter endings were cliffhangers and really left me wanting to start the next one. The book never really slows down and the it certainly doesn't disappoint. It's a great mix of action and adventure mixed in with the world of the supernatural. I would recommend it to anyone.

PS - I found out after reading that the place where the story occurs is indeed real and some of the actual history is worked into the story. After reading some of the creepy details the story seemed even more believable and cooler!

Where Shadows Play eBook Danny McAleese Reviews

This is one of those books that should come with a strong warning, not to begin reading it at bedtime when you have to be up in the morning. There's one doozy of a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter and while you may watch your alarm clock and its countdown to morning, promising yourself, "just one more chapter", you should know that you're going to break that promise over and over again.

Its characters are the kinds of kids we all knew in high school, who stumble onto a legendary local landmark late one night. I could play the click-bait game and tell you, "and you'll never guess what happened next", and it wouldn't be overselling it. In fact that's the best I can do right now without giving away what they saw, and where their choices took them.

I'm not a fan of horror, which is what I expected with such an enticingly creepy cover and the back-jacket blurbs. But as it turns out, this is a dark and twisty visit into the human psyche - the kind that made The Twilight Zone an enduring classic. There isn't a maniac in the woods with a hatchet, but the stakes are just as high. Neither is it a typical cabin-in-the-woods story where it's obvious which stereotyped character is going to die for his sins next, though there are sins, and there are consequences for them.

Where Shadows Play promises a lot up front, but not more than it should. So when you're halfway through and you begin to see the internal logic of the place in which these high schoolers find themselves, you may be tempted to wonder how it's all going to make sense by the end. If you are expecting left-brained, clinical, rational explanations of what they experience, one dark and foggy night, you may be disappointed (but if you are that type of reader, you might want to just skip fiction altogether). But if you enjoy a good ghost story around the campfire, one that leaves you understanding what you've just walked through with the characters, even if it probably wouldn't happen by daylight, and couldn't be easily conveyed, short of sharing this book with them, I think you'll enjoy the supernatural suspense surrounding The Pillars in this book.

(Since I usually read / review children's classics and young adult literature, I just want to clarify that because of the language and some of the subject matter, I would expect this book, if it were a movie, to be rated a strong PG-13. It is not for children, unless you want them to learn bad words and have serious nightmares.)
Quick and intense read. It really was good for such a quick story. Definitely a worthwhile read. Not a happy ending for everyone though.
What a ride.

I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. It was described to me as "Young Adult/Paranormal," which isn't really my preferred genre. But the story grabbed hold in the first chapter and wouldn't let go. The trio of main characters--Aaron, Jason, and Hailey--are deep and likable, with a unique... well, "relationship". All of it is compelling and relatable before we even get to the book's primary setting (which we arrive at pretty quickly).

I've never read a paranormal book like this. It was fast-paced, like a thriller. It never slowed down or meandered the way a lot of books do, and every chapter ended in a way that made me say, "Well crap, I can't stop reading NOW." I started this book before bed (a mistake), stayed up too late reading, and read the rest the next morning as soon as I had my coffee. It's been a while since I've been that engrossed in a book.

What makes this story extra cool is that it's based on an actual location the Verdura Plantation in Florida. Only the pillars exist today... which, well, makes sense when you read this story.

Great characters, exciting--and real--setting, amazing story. I'd recommend this to anyone, regardless of their genre preferences.
This was an enjoyable and very chilling tale, not to mention, a bit on the grim side. The story is beautifully written and the characters were interesting, although, a couple were significantly Irritating. As a group outing one night they find a house, and then history somewhat plays out in a way that nobody would want to learn within that house (pillars). I was engrossed, and by the end there is at least part of an explanation of what is going on, and it made sense. This was a spine tingler that I would definitely recommend. )
