A Change in the Weather follows the Russell family during the tenth anniversary of the disappearance of the polar ice cap, from March 2028 through May 2029. This is a great read. The impacts of climate change in this novel are completely plausible, both from the weather described and the impacts on our civilization. What is really great is how well developed the characters are; the reader can really feel how the people are personally impacted due to the crisis. The book takes the reader through family divisions, economic turmoil, tales of survival, and political upheaval. A great way to move from the science of climate change to how climate change might affect us as people. We need more books like this to put a human face on climate change science.Product details

This is a fascinating and harrowing glimpse of a future that seems both entirely plausible and very near. A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER is a thought-provoking page-turner, a story that uses a single, broken family to examine the questions posed by our planet's changing climate and diminishing resources from a number of divergent points of view. Although some of those view points appear much more admirable than others (at least to this reader), they are all portrayed with a sympathy that underscores the complexity of the problems we are--and will be--facing. Readers will have a hard time putting this book down, and once they have finished reading it, they will have an even harder time forgetting the gripping story that it tells.
Mr Welch has blended the way our energy industry really works with serious plausible global warming scenarios and sociological trends already observable today to present a future we should seek to avoid in a novel that entertains and frightens. Well done
This imagines all the social, political, and personal implications of climate change. Spoiler alert; it's not good. Characterizations and plotting are alarming without being cartoonish.
I greatly enjoyed this book. It was a real page-turner and I found it very moving. It's not a cheery tale, but I knew that going in, based on the topic. Highly recommended.
With right wing religious fanatics running the US and terrorists running amok the world over (i.e. shutting down oil exports in Saudi Arabia), this book is more about the political dysfunction and conflict that could result from climate change than about the actual ecological impacts of it. I suppose it is useful to point that out, but climate change is more the backdrop for this book than it's central focus. It follows a family whose members span the political spectrum in those difficult times.
This keenly imagined novel, set in 2028/2029 America (specifically in the San Francisco Bay Area), is so plausibly futuristic it reads like history, as if global warming has already begun to do its worst and the US is divided between those who deny responsibility (and who are perpetuating the problems in order to maintain global advantage) and those who accept responsibility (and who seek to make reparation through austerity and self-sacrifice)--both camps drawing inspiration from (misplaced) faith-based conviction. By keenly observing symptoms of today, Raymond Welsh (the author) has managed to forecast a bleakly believable tomorrow. Would that everyone could read this thoughtful book, hear its ominous warning, and thereby avert what appears to be inevitable. Compelling, eloquently written, and presciently conceived.
